eBooks Grow Your Influence Even If You Never Sell A Copy

Writer: Natalie HusseyNatalie Hussey

You don’t have to sell copies of your eBook to have your eBook sell for you.

A few years ago, a coworker gave me the essential book marketing tomb, “Book The Business: How To Make Big Money With Your Book Without Even Selling A Single Copy” by Adam Witty and Dan S. Kennedy. If you haven’t had the chance to read it yet and are thinking about writing an eBook, definitely add this book to your marketing reading list.

eBooks are perfect for the in-depth exploration of a topic, making them an effective platform for showcasing your industry expertise. Unlike traditional publishing methods, eBooks also allow you to skip the pitch and approval process and get straight to writing. Although there is a large market for eBooks, with 30% of Americans reporting regularly reading eBooks, writing one is about more than just appealing to this audience.

eBooks are also an effective way to communicate two important things:

  1. Your particular subject matter expertise and point of view.

  2. You have enough subject matter expertise to write an authoritative book.

The first is how you will sell the book. The simple truth is the best way to get someone to read your eBook is to write a book people want to read. Basic eBook marketing will be enough to sell any compelling topic. What Witty and Kennedy explore in their book, however, is the second point.

When you demonstrate your expertise through an impressive achievement like writing an eBook, you also establish yourself as an industry thought leader. As an industry thought leader, you will attract opportunities to access new markets and network with potential partners and clients, leading to numerous growth opportunities, including:

  • Speaking engagements at conferences, trade shows, and other industry-specific events that, in turn, can attract business opportunities.

  • Guest invitations to contribute to podcasts, blogs, and video content which will help you reach a bigger audience with your products and services.

  • Teaching opportunities at the university level and online, with paid webinars and classes that can help you network and attract more customers.

  • Get consulting opportunities to show businesses how to implement the right processes using your expertise.

  • Connect with other industry experts to create more opportunities through industry networking.

Beyond the advantages of influencer marketing, you can also use the book as a sales and marketing tool. Support sales prospecting by sending it to potential partners and clients as a conversation opener. If you gate the eBook, as opposed to selling the eBook, it becomes an excellent tool for passively generating and collecting qualified sales leads. You can also offer your eBook as a value-add on offers to close more sales.

Writing an eBook creates opportunities beyond book sales. eBooks deliver detailed information about your products or services in a format that readers can consume at their own pace. They position you as an expert and will help you build your professional reputation.
